Volunteers required to support Older People at Chorley Hospital

Older people’s charity, Royal Voluntary Service (formerly WRVS), needs volunteers to give a few hours a week to help with an on-ward support service at Chorley Hospital. The charity and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have been working in partnership since 2014 to extend and develop an on-ward service to improve the wellbeing of older patients during their stay at Chorley Hospital. This integrated approach focusses on the needs of older patients with long term conditions such as dementia. To provide this service, the volunteers have become part of the on-ward team, working alongside the nursing and medical staff to support patients at the hospital. They help create a calm environment for patients, providing companionship and reassurance, relieving boredom, reading, arts and crafts and a whole host of other activities. The Service is looking for more volunteers so that they can have an even greater impact. Kim Snape, Service Manager for the Royal Voluntary Service on-ward scheme, said: “This is a really important service for older patients at Chorley Hospital. The outcomes for patients, staff and volunteers have been overwhelming and we are looking to increase this further. All our volunteers are supported throughout their time volunteering at the Hospital. It is a really worthwhile way to spend your time.” Denise Morris, Public Health Co-ordinator at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a fantastic initiative that really benefits some of our most vulnerable patients. The volunteers provide really great interaction, distraction and engagement for our older patients and it is appreciated very much.” Volunteers are needed seven days a week and the charity is asking that they give a minimum of 2 hours on the day they attend. Volunteers will be supported with a full volunteer induction, alongside specific dementia training along with other relevant checks.
